“You know what it happens when you’re having a big guest in your house; you want to set your house in order so your visitor won’t have wrong impression about you.
“…They [Prison authorities] started with some painting works and all of that to welcome the President, but I told them this won’t help matters; the President should be able to see what we’re going through here".
The above was said by the Chairman of Ghana Prison Council, Rev. Dr Stephen Wengam when authorities at the Nsawam prisons made attempts to renovate the jail to welcome President John Dramani Mahama, Friday.
The President will be joined on tour by the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood and some state officials to the Nsawam prisons days after granting 900 inmates a presidential pardon.
Speaking to Accra-based Kasapa FM, Rev. Wengam opined that reports have been made available to the president to address issues facing the prisons – but the situation is yet to be attended to.
According to him, it will be appropriate for the president to at least witness the challenges facing Ghana’s prisons and the condition of inmates.
