An Accra High Court on Tuesday, sentenced Charles Antwi, the man who took a locally manufactured gun to President Mahama’s Church to 10 years in prison.

Charles, who appeared in court without a lawyer, said he wanted to kill President Mahama to take over his position.

The sentence has generated controversy with some Ghanaians questioning the judge's verdict. Others have described the ruling as too hasty.

Speaking to the issue on PEACE FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Lawyer Kwame Akuffo described the sentence as “an abuse of the process”.

According to him, judging from what the suspect was saying in court, “the judge should have immediately referred him (suspect) to a psychiatric evaluation…everything he was saying indicates that there was something wrong with his thinking and so he should have been evaluated. The maximum sentence according to law should have been five years and so I don’t know where this 10 years is coming from”.
