A number of houses built on waterways within Ga South Municipality in Accra would soon be pulled down to allow free flow of water when it rains, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ga South Municipal Assembly, Mr. Jerry Kwei Thompson, has disclosed to Today.

The MCE disclosed this in an interview with Today on Thursday, July 30, 2015 that some of the houses in the municipality have no permits and must be pulled down to allow free flow of water during rainfall.

According to the MCE, his outfit was taking the decision to save lives and properties because most people in the community have lost their homes and belongings due to constant flooding.

He stated that his outfit’s assessment of houses during a recent tour of communities within Ga South municipality clearly showed that several residents have built on waterways and without any regard to proper planning.

According to Mr. Thompson, once an approval is given, some houses will be pulled down; drains would be constructed and the river dredged in order to end the constant flooding problems in Ga South municipality.

He said the demolition will bring relief to people in the area and save many lives that would have been lost if the situation was worse.

Mr. Thompson assured residents in the municipality of the Assembly’s commitment to ensure that houses have the required permits before they are built, stressing that those that do not have permits would soon be pulled down.
