Angry workers of the National Disaster Management Organisation, (NADMO), yesterday stormed the premises of Ministry of Finance to demand their two years unpaid salaries.
The workers argued that for about two years, their salaries have been held up by the Ministry and Controller and Accountant General’s department, plunging them into serious financial difficulties.
Two months ago, some of them led the way to draw the attention of the Ministry in a petition to their plight, yet nothing positive had reflected yet.
However, the Chief Director of the Finance Ministry has promised to pay them next month, but many are the workers who want to see the cash in their accounts before believing him.
From the Ministry, they headed straight to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) to continue their agitation.
A disgruntled worker explained to this paper that their staff ID numbers have been blocked at CAGD making the payment of their salaries impossible. He wanted Controller to correct the anomaly immediately.
“It is so sad and pathetic. Seriously we are tired,” a lady who had not been paid for 31 months lamented. Some of them are fathers, mothers who have family responsibilities, she stressed. She said they have been relying on friends and families to survive.
Meanwhile, some NADMO coordinators have also been accused of hoarding provisions meant for distribution to staff of the relief support agency. One of the picketing ladies who decline to mention her name alleged the coordinators are “sitting on” rice meant for the staff.
