Veight districts and the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region are to benefit from an intensive spraying exercise aimed at preventing a possible outbreak of communicable diseases.

The fumigation exercise is also to sustain the campaign on cleanliness and proper disposal of both liquid and solid waste. The beneficiary districts are Nandom, Lambussie-Karni, Lawra, Jirapa, Sissala East, Sissala West, Wa East and Wa West.

Speaking to theDaily Graphic, Mr Tahiru Mumuni, the Regional Co-ordinator of S. K. Bio-Sanitation Systems, a private fumigation company, spearheading the spraying exercise, said the exercise was aimed at ridding places of convenience and waste disposal sites of vectors including houseflies and mosquitoes.

With the onset of rains, the possibility of an outbreak of diseases in the region is very high and so it is important that we avoid any form of complacency, he noted, adding that S.K. Bio-Sanitation Systems Limited was, therefore, embarking on the spraying exercise across the region to get rid of houseflies which mainly spread cholera, particularly during the rainy season and beyond.

The areas targeted, according to Mr Mumuni, were public toilets, rubbish containers and final disposal sites.
He, therefore, advised residents to co-operate with the staff of the organisation and urged them to take sanitation-related issues and hygiene in general seriously.

Environmental health

The Wa Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr George Arthur, was full of praise for the initiative, saying the spraying exercise would go a long way to stall the outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases throughout the region.

Mr Arthur further appealed to other private institutions to emulate the example of S.K. Bio-Sanitation Systems Limited and complimented them for their efforts at ensuring improved sanitation in the region.
