A man who has allegedly been parading himself as an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and defrauding people under the pretext of helping them enlist in the various security services has been arrested by the Airport Police.

The 30-year-old suspect, who identified himself as Richard Anyomi, is said to have worked with agents who acted as middlemen.

He is said to have met his victims in hotels and restaurants near the Kotoka International Airport.

Since his arrest by a team of policemen at a restaurant near the airport about 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, 60 of his victims have reported to the police about having been defrauded by Anyomi.

Records at the Airport Police Station show that the suspect has collected GH¢100,000 from his victims, with the amounts paid by each victim varying from person to person.

Suspect’s phones off

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Airport District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Yao Tetega, said Anyomi was arrested after one of the victims had lodged a complaint with the police.

He said the complainant claimed Anyomi had collected GH¢5,500 from him under the pretext of helping him get enlisted into the Ghana Immigration Service.

However, after receiving the money from the complainant early this year, Anyomi failed to deliver on his promise but rather went into hiding

Mr Tetega said after calls to Anyomi’s mobile phones failed to go through, the complainant  realised he had been defrauded.

With the help of some other victims, he said, the suspect was arrested.

Middlemen

In the course of investigations, it was established that most of the victims were from the Brong Ahafo Region where Anyomi had employed two middlemen to sign on people for recruitment into the various security services.

Some of the victims, apart from the initial registration or consultancy fees, paid between GH¢3,000 and GH¢5,000, depending on the security service they wanted to join.

During interrogation, Mr Tetega said, the suspect admitted engaging in the fraudulent activity.

He is said to have told the police that he was unemployed and not a worker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as he claimed.

Mr Tetega urged anyone who had been defrauded by Anyomi to contact the Airport Police as investigations continued.
