In fulfillment of a long-held NPP campaign pledge, the Akufo-Addo government has begun the process of implementing a comprehensive national identification project to build a database of Ghanaians and other nationals resident in Ghana.
At a broad consultative meeting chaired by the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, all the major stakeholders, including the Births and Deaths Registry (BDR), National Identification Authority (NIA), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Ghana Revenue Authority and National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) underscored the need to have a single national database to aid policy planning and implementation.
Also in attendance were officials from the Ministry of Finance, Minister designate for Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Electoral Commission (EC), Driver Vehicle and Licence Authority (DVLA), Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems Limited (GHIPSS) and industry experts.
The National Identification project is expected to be completed within the first year of the NPP administration, in fulfillment of a manifesto pledge to complete the registration of all residents in Ghana under the National Identification Scheme, thereby establishing an integrated Data Warehouse of databases from key public institutions, using the National Identification System as the unique identifier for data items, and automating the processes involved in accessing public services at both national and local government offices.
The NPP government is convinced the National ID scheme would help formalize the economy through the establishment of a national database, using the National Identification System as the primary identifier, with linkages to the databases of institutions such as the Police, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Passport Office, Immigration, Courts, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA)
Addressing the representatives of the key stakeholders, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia noted that there has been too much talk around the issue of national ID cards but very little effective action or results even though $50 million has been spent on the project since 2009.
A single national ID system would, amongst others, track immunization of children and health care of citizens, issue drivers licenses and passports linked to digital identity registry, eliminate ghost names from the civil service payroll, and reduce cost of maintaining multiple Identity databases, the Vice President stated.
Four Committees – Legal, Technical, Financial and Oversight – to shepherd the project.

TAX EVERYBODY WHO BECOMES A GHANIAN. IF NIGERIANS OR BENINOIS CLAIM TO TO BE GHANAIANS THEY SHOULD ALL MADE TO PAY TAX
All are welcome news and very promising. What I am afraid of is capability to sustain this momentum. Most often they start well ad when they (politicians/govt) become familiars with things they slack and resort to management style that is regressive. This, Addo must guard against with all tenacity else it might be a show, a nine-day wonder. Addo must establish SUSTAINABILITY OVERSIGHT BOARD? to assist him run his government with assiduity and purpose if Ghana can be salvaged under his governance. Sustainability means all, particularly maintenance, efficient and effective use of both human and natural and financial resources. Thanks Addo may God guide your heart not divert.Amen
Hope Akuffo Addo remembers that folks lack basic drinking wter, even desk for classrooms etc. Don't be like Trump where Flint people in a small town in USA lacks portable drinking water whereas the smart folks thinks building a wall makes them genius!
GHANA IS LIKE THE ISRAELITES, WHO DISOBEYED GOD AND THEREFORE GOD HANDED THEM INTO THE HANDS OF THEIR ENEMIES. IF GHANA DISOBEYS GOD AND DOES NOT LISTEN TO HIM, HE HANDS OR GIVES GHANA INTO ITS BITTERNESS ENEMIES THE NDC[NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS]TO TEACH GHANA LESSONS FOR GHANA TO CRY AND GO DOWN ON ITS KNEES. GOD BEING WHO HE IS LISTENS TO THEM AND HE WILL THEREFPRE BRING THEM BACK TO PARADISE WHICH IS THE NPP[NEW PATROTIC PARTY. TO BE CONTINUED NEXT TIME.

Long Live H.E.Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.Intelligent brains are at work now.Ghana will work again!
This is where we need that NASA guy who is going to NCA. What is his name koraa?
I am very much impressed with the seriousness and angle with which the NPP has commenced the national development agenda. My prayer goes for this government.
This is the beginning of progress. This is one program that is so dear to my heart because without it there's very little we can do in terms of progress. I'm glad the Nana Akuffo Addo NPP Administration has made it a priority early in their stewardship of the national development agenda. To think that the NDC Administration spent a whooping $50m just foot dragging is too painful to bear. God bless President NAA and his NPP Administration.
