Captain Retired Nkrabea Effah-Dartey in analyzing the death of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama in the hands of the mob in Denkyira-Boase in the Central Region has concluded that the late Captain of the 5th Infantry Battalion (5BN) was taken by surprise.
A military officer with the 5th Infantry Battalion (5BN) at Burma Camp in Accra but on detachment duties at Denkyira Boase in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central region has been lynched by residents on suspicion of being an armed robber.
Captain Maxwell Mahama who is commander of a military detachment in the area according to his subordinates, on Monday dawn was seen jogging along the main road and as he stopped by to ask some women for directions, they saw the pistol on him.
According to them, he was not dressed in military uniform and because of recent spate of armed robbery in the town after residents were attacked a day earlier, the women called the Assembly man who organized the youth of the town to lynch him.
Speaking to the issue on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Capt. Rtd. Effah-Dartey said it is very difficult to imagine what exactly happened.
“I am sure he never expected anything like that happening when he was going for the jogging but because he is an Infantry soldier, he decided to pick his weapon for the jogging for any eventualities,” he asserted.
He stressed that “I am sure he must have been taken completely by surprise when the attack came and so before he could read between the lines to know what is happening and even pull out his gun to fire, he was under attacked.”
He reiterated that it is possible the late Capt. Mahama was surprised to the extent that he didn’t have the presence of mind to even defend himself in the process of the attack; hence the mob in the area pelted him with stones to the point of death and eventually killing him.
“It is difficult but it is so unfortunate because if he knew he was going into enemy zone or territory, he would not have trotted to that area or even move in the company of two soldiers for protection,” he asserted.

I still find it difficult to understand why the beloved fine gentleman of a soldier didn't shoot to kill his murderers at the time his life was in IMMINENT DANGER! The point about the surprise nature of the attack is hard to take because we're told that ONCE A SOLDIER ALWAYS A SOLDIER. So what's the surprise about? This whole unfortunate death raises issues with the broader argument of how people get recruited into our security services. I'm still of the opinion that a NORMAL military officer would have killed at least three of the mob that barbarically murdered him. May Captain Adam Mahama's soul rest in peace and may his brutal murderers be made to face the responsibilities of their action.
Yes agreed that he was taken by surprise ,there is something behind his killing for which MOD must come clean, those soldiers were not there to fight galamsey but rather to protect foreign galamsey operators. Even though his death was needles and he never expected to be killed that is why he did not waste some of the mob but truth be told this look like a revenge killing by the villagers. I learnt a DCE has been told to ***barred word*** because emotions are high but he seems to be speaking the truth. It seems the soldiers have gone to the village to beat the hell out of them so they were waiting for their sunny day to pay back.Unfortunately such a fine gentleman was the victim. My condolence to the family ,I must say that the days where soldiers and police beat people in times of operations must stop because others forgive but some people will not forgive you and innocent people suffer the pay back. My personal experience with police had made me not to ever help a police or a soldier unless I personally know you and I use the motorway every morning ,I refuse to give them lift. Police even in usa torment civilians. They should improve their human relation. I think the lower grade students are too many in the forces so they think the show of force makes them powerful.
RIP
Captain do you honestly think a MOB not an individual will just attack a lone jogger without provocation from either party? Much as this death is needless and unfortunate, l think the matter goes beyond the lynching. There must be some antecedent factors, it appears to me that we are being carried away by the personality involved, l will urge us all to pause and think devoid of emotion. THERE IS SOMETHING WE ARE NOT BEING TOLD. At the same time those involved should be speedily tried and punished.
HE WAS NOT TAKEN BY ANY SURPRISE, HE WAS JUST A GOOD MAN OF GOD..
