The National Identification Authority has outdoored a new national identification card, with the promise to launch its massive registration exercise.
At a news briefing in Accra Wednesday, NIA Executive Director, Professor Ken Agyemang Attefuah said the Authority is prepared to embark the exercise projected to formalise Ghana’s economy.
“The National Identification Authority is ready to provide Ghanaians with a modern robust national identification system and a smart ID card that will meet the modern aspirations of the people of Ghana and carry us into the future,” he said.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to launch the nationwide registration exercise on September 15.
The launch will officially pave the way for the rolling out of the new identification process.
The NIA has explained the exercise will start with the security agencies, schools, banks and the population in the Greater Accra Region.
The next stop of the registration van will be areas in the Central, Western and Brong Ahafo Regions. The rest of the regions will later follow, the NIA has said.
Ghanaians resident in other countries have not been left out of the registration process. An opportunity will be given to them to register for the card at a fee wherever they are.
The new identification system was an outcome of a private public partnership with the Margins Group, tasked to make the new ID cards.
Margins Group CEO, Moses Baiden described the new card as the most secured Identification card with about 14 international security features.
It also has a multi-purpose function, he told the media.
Another new feature of the card is the passport and ECOWAS logos on it which allow it to be used in place of a passport across ECOWAS member countries.
Mr Baiden explained one of the functions of the new card is that apart from it being a national identification card, it will also be linked to one’s bank account to enhance modern payment systems.
The new ID card is expected to have a lifespan of 10 years after which it will be renewable at a fee to be determined by the Authority.

Thank to the current administration for doing this. We should cover all national as living in the country, the foreigners own country of origin should be indicated. But it could be very nice where our streets and house could be numberd so as to track individuals to their homes to combat crime.
The fact that we are paying taxes does not mean government should use the money for anything at all. what at all can we use the NIHA Card for? nothing. you wasted money to do those cards and people have it in their rooms like white elephant. please withdraw those cards and do a proper Voter ID for citizens. so please stop NIA stuff and lets have some peace.
The National ID should be devoid of expiry date.Citizenship does not expire. It only occurs when one denounces his/her citizenship. The card should be done for life.
I humbly think that the issue of renewal of the card after ten years should be reconsidered. anyway the holders' citizenship does not expire after the said stipulated renewal period. the authority should possibly charge individuals who need replacement at a fee. Ghanaians remain Ghanaians, except in such instances where one denounces their citizenship.
My advice is that we should be very careful so that no foreigner get a hand to this, especially these Nigerians that have flooded the country. I will suggest that those registering in a region should be selected from the region and the locality to identify true Ghanaians. In Burkina Faso this is linked with the family lineage. Lets for the first time get this right for only Ghanaians to register. These can also be issued at birth along with the birth certificates.
Please, its a good idea. However to cover all Ghana, dont give time line. Just use three months to do it so that those in the remote areas can also register.
