The Family of the late former President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Hilla Limann, has expressed their profound gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his decision to rename the Wa Technical University after the late President.

According to a letter signed by the paramount chief of Gwollu & head of the Limann family, Kuorku Kuri-Buktie Limann IV, the family is appreciative to the President and his government for their kind gesture and their presence at the 20th Anniversary Remembrance Day forum on Dr. Limann’s death, which took place early this year in Accra.

According to the family, the renaming of the Wa Technical University after their Kinsman has bestowed on the family great pride. Besides, it has contributed to the elevation of the good and excellent legacy of the late President.

They also thanked the President for the donation made to Vanessa Aisha Limann upon winning the Presidential Pitch of the young entrepreneur’s competition.

The letter further stated: “The Limann family intend to come down to Accra as soon as possible through the Minister of Business Development, Alhaji Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, so that we can personally render our sincere gratitude to his Excellency and his able government”.

Based on the approval of Parliament, the technical university will be renamed after the late Dr. Hilla Limann.


Born in Gwollu in the Sissala West District in the Upper West Region, Dr. Hilla Limann was born on 12th December, 1934.

Dr. Hilla Limann, the only President to have ruled Ghana in the 3rd Republic, completed his basic school education at the Government Middle School in 1949 in Tamale. He then proceeded to study Political Science at the London School of Economics from 1957 to 1960 and subsequently completed a Diploma in French at the Sorbonne University in France. He later obtained a Bachelor in Arts (Hons) degree at the University of London and Ph.D. in Political Science and Constitutional Law at the University of Paris.

 Political Career

Following the 1979 coup in Ghana by Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Dr. Limann contested and won the 1979 general elections on the ticket of the People’s National Congress (PNC) with about 62 per cent of the popular votes in the second round of the elections and assumed office on 24th September, 1979. He was overthrown in a coup d’état staged by J.J. Rawlings on 31st December, 1981. He later contested in the 1992 general elections but lost.


Dr. Hilla Limann passed away on 23rd January, 1998, and was survived by his wife, Mrs. Fulera Limann. His children are Lida Limann, Lariba Montia Baba Limann, Sibi Andan,  Daani Limann, Zilla Limann and Salma Limann.
