The Ghana Police Service has expressed sadness over the fact that some persons looked on as a driver and his conductor physically assaulted a police officer.
A commercial bus driver and his conductor who have been arrested were captured in a video assaulting a police officer who was trying to query them for parking wrongly.
Speaking to this in an interview on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Director-General of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, ACP David Eklu expressed surprise that 'people looked on as a man in uniform was being assaulted'.
"I can’t understand how . . . we are saddened that a lot of people were standing there doing nothing. I thought the public would have assisted but they didn’t and it saddens us," he bemoaned.
According to him, "the people around could have helped in arresting the two (citizen's arrest) since they were doing something wrong; attacking a man in uniform or they could have dialed the police emergency number".
Meanwhile, the driver and his conductor will appear before court today.
According to the policeman who is with the Odorkor police station, he was performing his duties when he was attacked by the civilians for confronting them when they violated the road regulation act.
The Policeman revealed that he confronted the driver after he parked in the middle of the road to pick passengers which resulted in massive traffic.
He also stated that he went to the scene to solve the situation but met an accident between a motorbike and a private car and attempting to remedy the situation he was almost run over by the driver who parked in the middle of the road.
According to the policeman, he chased the driver on a motorbike which he managed to cross him and queried why he was driving recklessly.
This resulted in a heated verbal argument which the drivers and their mates decided to pounce on the policeman and ended up beating him mercilessly.

any violent act, either from the public or the police must be condemned. however, the police should know that they are there for the public interest, which primarily is about protecting the citizen. do they think people are ***barred word*** not to know the police has not been doing its job? they see police taking pribe from trotro drivers in broad day light. kicking innocent civilians, slapping MPs, etc. people are not ***barred word***; they can read between the lines. act professionally without fear or favor, and see if you'll be treated badly by the public.
I am also saddened that the police joined to beat a pregnant (time) reporter. Mr. Police come back again.
I do not know if the police is reading our comments. Who told you we care about you, it won't happen until you treat us like people created equally like you. The least said here about you and your service, the better. When the soldier was killed, it took me a very long time to overcome, but whenever something unpleasant happen to any of you, I am happy because I see it as a lesson being taught. Change your ways and everything will be find.
if you go around doing the same thing to the civilians what else do you want them to do when the ball falls into their court? you should be more professional.
Even though I don’t support the beaten of the police man. What was the action the police administration took when a video of a Trotro driver was beaten by three MTTU policemen? If the general public feel the police can assault them and go free. The general public will also look on. I sort to calm tempers between a driver and a police man what I was told by the policeman was I am preventing him to do his work knowing that that argument will one way or the other result in exchange of blows.
It looks as if NDC mem bers who are on here making comments are lunatics. The kind comment you read from these NDC people sometimes are very annoying to say the least. When did you see a politician slapping a police officer?I have confronted police officers slapping taxi drivers and in some cases passengers before. The police system in Ghana needs serious training and needs structured
Am so much disappointed in this publication. How many times did cameras captured top politicians slapping and assaulting officers in uniform in the presence of their colleagues officers and they did nothing?? This kind of begging civilians to fight for officers in uniform is weak and shameful! How come the politicians are now doing your job and are even smarter and powerful than you??
You will be sadder, you stood there and watch machomen shot and broke someone's leg in ayawaso but you wanted civilians to have defended you.
I am not surprised at all by the overwhelming comments against the police.
you Ghana police the officer should have taken the car no and prosecute him for court instead of leaving his post and running aftre him . In his absent wont other driver also park there and do the same thing . what about the cameras you said it have been fixed at vantange point , Ghana police advance in your services your way of working need much to be talk about
