The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has warned of more deaths during the rainy seaason if people continue to build in water ways and pollute the environment with their daily activities.

According to them, they are doing their best to prevent more floods, but if people continue to illegally construct properties on water ways and engage in illicit activities, more deaths would be recorded when there is any downpour.

Speaking to Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on Okay Fm's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, Deputy Director in charge of floods, Mr Evans Anakwah explained that it is rather unfortunate that people will have to loose their lives when there is a small downpour.

"You see we at NADMO have a duty to protect life and property, but we cannot do it without the support of the citizenry whose daily activities cause this perennial floods," he said.

"There is a need for drastic change in the habit of citizens who litter indiscriminately. The way and manner in which we keep putting garbage in our gutters will not help us in any way at all. It is sad how people take advantage of the rains to collect and put rubbish in our drains,” he added.

He is therefore calling for enforcement of the laws to “punish people who litter and throw rubbish in our drains.”

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed five (5) deaths after Nkrumah Circle got flooded Sunday night.

The incident involved a woman and her child, two men and one other who was electrocuted.

Parts of Accra got flooded, especially the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and its environs leaving most roads unmotorable.
