New Patriotic Party [NPP] Member of Parliament [MP0 for Effiduase-Asokore constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie has organized a two-day health screening exercise for officers at regional headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service Station in Tema.
The exercise was in collaboration with some doctors and staff from St Johns Hospital and Fertility Center.
Mr Samuel Ampoh of the reputable hospital indicated that, the health screening was aimed at ensuring that fire officers remain healthy.
“We are doing it for free, it is for all the fire officers. It’s a free screening we are doing for them. As I said it’s part of our cooperate social responsibilities so all the cost is on St John Hospital and Fertility Centre.
The exercise which was the first of its kind, saw fire officers both old and new trooping to the screening centres with a recorded attendance of over 900 officers.
The beneficiaries were screened of various indicators like blood sugar, ECG which checks the work rate of the heart, blood pressure, eye tests, among other disease at the their station in Tema.
Some of the beneficiaries [Fire Service Officer] were referred to St John’s Hospital in Accra for further treatment.
Mr Samuel Ampoh further said the exercise which will ensure good health to the people remained a priority to Ayew Afriyie not as a lawmaker and but board chairman of the St John Hospital.
“Hon Ayew Afriyie is the board chairman of the hospital so he oversees all the activities of the hospital. He’s not doing it as a Member of Parliament. He is part of us as a team member of St John and fertility centre.
“Tomorrow we will come back and then complete it. Next week too we would be in the Tantra Community for another health screening. That one will be for the general public,” he said.
He added that, the MP and Board Chairman of the St John Hospital is concerned about their health and asked them to undertake regular medical check-ups and consult health professionals.

This is a good exercise all must take part. These diseases are fast killers we may not know and we blame witches for sudden deaths. Our people must be educated it is very important to check your health every 6 months so that medical professionals could detect killer diseases on time to prevent unnecessary deaths. I know Ghanaians complain a lot about money but if you don't have good health how do you get money? When I first came abroad what my do advised me to do was to get a job with an insurance else the day one gets sick you will use all the money acquired to treat that sickness. I listened to his advise and I have no course to worry now ! so please get the NHIS and check your health status every 6 months or every year to feel healthy don't wait to get sick before you see a doctor.Your health and life is important to us !
