A Former Chief of the Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Matthew Quashie, passed on yesterday at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra where he has been hospitalized for a while now.
As the 29th head of the Ghana Armed Forces, he served under former President John Mahama but was removed from office alongside service chiefs and his position of CDS taken over by Air Marshal Michael Sampson-
Oje.
The late Naval officer was one of the students sponsored by the Defence Minister to do a sixth form programme at the then Government Secondary Technical School in Takoradi between 1970 and 1972. He proceeded thereof to the Ghana Military Academy at Teshie for a basic officer cadet course.
He underwent a naval officers’ course at the Royal Britannia Naval College in the UK after which he was commissioned as S/Lt. He subsequently attended various military courses and held many command positions serving on Ghana Navy ships such as GNS, Keta, Sahene, Achimota and Kromantse.
He was a few months shy of 70.
