As Ghana and the world try to contain COVID 19, Compassion International Ghana has responded with relief items totaling GHS1.6 million to poor and needy communities and households.

The items were mainly consumables and hygiene materials such as rice, oil, beans, gari, hand sanitizers, soaps and detergents aimed at complementing the governments' food security and water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH) efforts; which are strategic for combating the pandemic.

In all the 34,483 households within the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, Volta, Eastern, Central and Western Regions have been reached. These are some of the regions and communities Compassion Ghana and its Frontline Church Partners are providing holistic development to poor and needy children and their families.  Compassion International Ghana is a child sponsorship organization sponsoring over 90,000 children across nine (9) regions in Ghana.

The National Director of Compassion International Ghana, Mrs Gifty Dansoa Appiah assured Compassion’s stakeholders that further monitoring is ongoing to enhance the food security intervention to ensure that more families that need targeted intervention are supported as the economy recovers after a three-week partial lockdown in Greater Accra and the Greater Kumasi areas. “We assure our Church Partners, the beneficiaries and their caregivers that Compassion Ghana is with them in these difficult times of socio-economic life. We will provide additional targeted respond when we have justifiable reasons to do so.”

Mrs Appiah urged pastors and leaders of Compassion’s Church Partners to continually pray for God to intervene and reverse the situation. “We are worried that our beneficiaries and all Ghanaian children are not in school. It is not ideal for children to be locked at home when they must be in the classrooms.   We need God’s intervention.

Beyond providing relief support to needy families, Mrs. Appiah disclosed that Compassion Ghana will expand the scope of the support by initiating early recovery measures to help caregivers revamp their livelihoods and provide basic needs for their children.

In response to Compassion’s intervention, some beneficiaries and caregivers asked for God’s blessings for Compassion’s sponsors and donors.  “My family and I are so grateful to you for this timely intervention. We know we are not in ordinary times, so these items came at the right time and will go a long way to help us”, says Frank Afum, a youth beneficiary at the Central Assemblies of God Child and Youth Development Centre at Tema Community 4.
