The United States reported a whopping 52,788 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the largest single-day total since the start of the pandemic.
President Trump speculated in a Fox Business interview that the virus was “going to sort of disappear” at some point, but many other officials are far less optimistic.
Across the country, plans for a gradual return to normalcy are quickly being cast aside, with California, Michigan and New York City the latest to rethink some aspects of reopening.
More than 800,000 new coronavirus cases were detected in the United States in June, many of them in Sun Belt states that were quick to reopen. At least 125,602 deaths have been reported since the start of the pandemic.
