Mary-Pat Hector, a popular female Civil Rights Activist in the United States (US), has lauded President Akufo-Addo for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

According to her, she has been in the country for some days and she is highly impressed about the positive measures being put in place by the government to help stop Covid-19 and save human lives.

Mary-Pat Hector, who was one of the youngest community leaders to advise ex-US President, Barack Obama, on Criminal Justice Reform, said Ghana was the ‘trailblazer’ in the Covid-19 fight.

“I have personally experienced a lot of the safety protocols the government has been putting into action and I believe that what is happening here should be a blueprint for many countries across the world,” she told the media in Kumasi yesterday, adding that “I can truly say since being here that the President has taken the needed measures to ensure that Ghanaians can live and thrive during this trying times across the world.”

Ms. Hector, at the tender age of 19, made history when she became the youngest woman and person of colour to run for public office in the State of Georgia. She also serves as the State Coordinator of BYV and Rise.

PPE Distribution

The Civil Rights Activist collaborated with Shout Africa Foundation, an NGO, and Adonko Group of Companies to distribute Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to traders in Kumasi on Wednesday.

Ms. Hector, assisted by Edmund Kyei and Bernard Annan of Shout Africa Foundation, distributed Adonko branded hand sanitizers and boxes of face masks to hundreds of traders at Atonsu Market in Kumasi.

She said Covid-19 was real and claiming human lives across the globe, and therefore admonished Ghanaians to strictly adhere to health protocols in order to remain safe.

“I will tell you in almost a year, Covid-19 has caused us such turmoil, with more than 400,000 American lives lost to Covid-19, I haven’t felt safe until I got to Ghana,” she said; adding that Ghanaians were doing great work to defeat the virus.

Akufo-Addo Factor

Ms. Hector observed that President Akufo-Addo indeed meant his famous statement, “We know how to bring the economy back to life, but what we don’t know is how to bring people back to life.”

She said right from her arrival at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, she realized that the government and people of Ghana were determined to stop Covid-19 from spreading further.

Meanwhile, Ms. Hector, Mr. Kyei and Mr. Annan of Shout Africa Foundation have presented a magazine dubbed ‘Ghana Public Health Matters’ to the CEO of Adonko Group of Companies, Dr. Kwaku Oteng.

The magazine mainly highlighted the government’s numerous interventions and efforts to help defeat the Covid-19 in the country. It also teaches about what one must do to stay away from the virus.

Ms. Hector promised to return to Ghana in future and contribute to the development of the country and congratulated US President-elect, Joe Biden and his Vice, Kamala Harris, and wished them success in political office.
