This week, the country’s health minister announced it had no plans to roll out Covid vaccines.
This hardly came as a surprise: just a few days before, President John Magufuli had suggested coronavirus vaccines could harm people.
No evidence was ever provided to back such claims, and yet they worried health officials across the continent.
Critics have accused the president of playing down the threat posed by the virus and, by doing so, of risking the lives of many people.
So, has Tanzania really found a way to dodge this pandemic?
