Ghana has regained its status as the largest gold producer on the African continent, surpassing South Africa, according to the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
The country experienced a remarkable 32% surge in gold production last year, marking a significant rebound after a notable decline in output.
In 2021, Ghana yielded its leading position to South Africa due to a sharp drop in production levels.
However, the tables have turned, with Ghana's gold output soaring to 3.7 million ounces in 2022, up from 2.8 million ounces the previous year.
This remarkable growth can be attributed to increased production in both the large-scale and small-scale sectors.
During the annual general meeting, Joshua Mortoti, the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, highlighted the extraordinary achievement: "The large-scale gold sub-sector achieved its highest output in the country's history in 2022."
He further explained that a combination of heightened production and the expansion of existing mines contributed to a 13% rise in the large-scale sector's contribution to the national gold output, reaching 3.1 million ounces last year compared to 2.7 million ounces in 2021.
Additionally, Mortoti revealed that member companies of the mines chamber had successfully sold over 77,620 ounces of gold through the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. This initiative, launched by the Bank of Ghana, aims to bolster the nation's gold reserves.

How does this impact on the ordinary person? People from the Gold mining areas will one revolt against the people in power.
Masa, it's not about reclaiming positions. It is about ensuring that the first position you occupy translate into visible benefits for your people. Compare the towns and cities where gold is mined in South Africa to that of Ghana and ask yourself whether Ghana is actually in the lead. The world is now a global village where people now have access to lot of information thus making comparisons very easy. It is u thinkable that a country blessed with all the natural resources on Mother Earth is still struggling to provide basic facilities to make life a bit comfortable for its citizens. Can one confidently say the gold, bauxite, manganese , cocoa, timber, crude oil are blessings ? We have timber but pupils in basic schools still lie on the floor like lizards to learn, we are the leading producer of gold in Africa and yet we can't dualize the road linking our two major cities Accra-Kumasi. 66 years after independence roads in gold producing towns is an eyesore. We have crude oil and yet still without a 3 billion dollar IMF loan , we are told the economy will collapse, the GRA keeps telling us they have exceeded their yearly targets and yet still government can fund statutory payments . Getfund, Road fund, Health insurance fund, district assemblies common fund, school feeding programme are all in arrears.Question then is what considerations goes into government budget such that the tax collector exceeds the targets set for them and government still owes individuals and state institutions. Value added tax( VAT) is paid in advance by the final consumer . On what bases can government then have difficulty releasing monies paid in advance to those who should be utilizing such monies for the benefit of the people. How will government convince a lay man about this. If you are first in any subject, the results speaks for itself.
