A 25-year-old spinner has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a man to death at Dansoman in Accra on Sunday.
The suspect, Vincent Amuzu, and his younger brother, Paa Tee, are alleged to have armed themselves with a machete and a knife to attack Theophilus Nana Boateng at a drinking spot in the area.
Boating, aged 20, who was stabbed in the upper abdomen, died instantly. Paa Tee is currently on the run, but an intensive search has been mounted by the police for his arrest, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
According to the Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Freeman Tettey, the incident happened about 10 a.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2013.
He said Boateng and the two suspects lived in the same area. On Saturday January 19, Boateng’s brother had an engagement and so his mother contracted the suspect, a known spinner in the area, to provide music for the event.
The following day, Amuzu was said to have gone to Boateng’s house to download some songs from his mother’s laptop onto his (Amuzu’s) pen drive. Just as Amuzu was leaving the house, he met Boateng at the entrance and Boateng gave Amuzu a slap without any provocation.
Mr. Tettey said Amuzu went back to Boateng’s mother and reported the incident to her, but she pleaded with him to ignore her son, since she was fed up with his behaviour. Not satisfied, Amuzu went home and reported the incident to his elder brother who asked Paa Tee to accompany Amuzu to confront Boateng.
Amuzu and Paa Tee met Boateng at a drinking spot near the area and as soon as Boateng saw the two approaching, he broke a beer bottle and threatened to stab them if they dared come closer to him.
As a result of the threat, Amuzu and Paa Tee retreated and left the scene but they went back armed with a kitchen knife and a machete. The suspect and his brother then engaged Boateng in a scuffle, in the course of which Amuzu allegedly stabbed Boateng.
Boating was said to have fallen down unconscious and was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
