Following the revelation that Nazir Nortei Alema, a 25-year-old graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has joined the bulging ranks of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a terrorist organization, the worried father, Abdul Latif Alema has alleged his son went in the company of many Muslim youth.

Nazir’s fateful trip to the training grounds of the so-called Islamic State, as they are derogatively referred to, started on 2nd August 2015, soon after his completion of the mandatory National Service in Ghana, which he undertook at the Statistical Service.

According to him, Nazir Nortei Alema’s decision to join ISIS is heart threatening to the family, alleging that ten (10) Ghanaian youths are believed to be involved with his son who has been recruited to join the ISIS.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Abdul Latif Alema said he does not support the decision of his son, Nazir Nortei Alema to join the ISIS with the intention to carry out charity work; adding he could have done his charity work in Ghana and not in Iraq or Syria.

He however was convinced that his son may have become one of the Islamic extremist because his decision to join the ISIS makes him different from the rest of his children.

“His decision to join the ISIS is heart threatening to us and we heard 10 Ghanaian youth have joined the ISIS. His mother is devastated and she has been crying everyday amidst fasting and prayers with the hope that God will change the heart of her son to come back home,” he stated.

He therefore cautioned Muslim parents especially the educated ones to be aware of such happening in the country; advising the parents to be on the lookout and talk to their children to stop the intention of joining the ISIS.
