Exactly 190 years ago today, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana was established. It was exactly 18th December, 1828, that the first batch of missionaries of the Basel Evangelical Mission Society in Basel Switzerland arrived in the Gold Coast with the main aim of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

They toiled and labored to establish what has now become the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG).

This was contained in a press statement issued and signed by the Public Relations Officer of the PCG, Rev George Ezekiel Larbi on behalf of the General Assembly Council of the Church.

According to the statement 190 years after, the PCG can boast of twenty one Presbyteries, both home and abroad which include Asante, Akuapem, Kwahu, Dangme-Tongu, Ga, Ga West, Asante South, Central, Western, Brong Ahafo, West Brong, Sefwi, Sekyere, Akyem Abuakwa, West Akyem, Volta, Upper, Northern, North American /Australia, Europe and Asante Akyem.

The statement said the PCG has grown well to 294 Districts, and a total of 4,546 Congregations and Preaching Posts and still counting with nearly one million membership.

The Church which is one of the biggest churches in Ghana has a total of 5,701 agents, comprising 1,149 ministers, 2,329 Catechists, 2,143 Caretakers and 80 Evangelists.

“The PCG over the years has contributed immensely to socio-economic development to Ghana through education at all levels from crèche to university, health care delivery, agriculture, business, entrepreneurship and many more,” the statement noted.

According to the statement the PCG now has 55 health institutions spread all over the country in Agogo, Bawku, Dormaa-Ahenkro, Donkorkrom, Bolgatanga, Salaga, Tease, Konongo, Duayaw-Nkwanta, Garu, Sandema, etc making it the third largest provider of health services in Ghana.

On Education the PCG currently has over 2,400 basic schools, about 30 Senior High Schools, 5 Colleges of Education, 3 Vocational Schools, 4 Nursing Training Colleges, a University, Two Research Institutes, and five Training Centers.

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana would continue to live up to its mandate as a true Bible-Believing and Practicing Church with a vision to spread the Word of God to the ends of the earth.

“On this occasion of 190 birth day of the Church, the Moderator of the General Assembly, Right Reverend Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, the Clerk of General Assembly, Reverend Dr Samuel Ayete-Nyampong, and the General Assembly Council wish all members of the Church ayekoo for their contributions”.

The leadership of the Church also takes this opportunity to pay tribute to all gallant men and women who sacrificed their lives, possessions and money to bring the Church this far.

As we celebrate Christmas the leadership of PCG wishes the entire membership of the Church a special Merry Christmas and a Prosperous Happy New Year.

ASOMDWEI NKA MO NYINAA. AMEN
