Feasibility studies and drawings on the 60 million euro Ada Sea Defence Project in the Dangme East District of the Greater Accra Region has been completed for actual work to begin.

The project which comes in three phases would have the first phase constructed on a 4.5km land on the eastern part of the district and it is scheduled to be completed by December 2013.

The contractors, PMI Marine and Construction (Services) Limited, are already on site and have engaged eight different quarries to supply the company with rocks for the construction work.

A large tract of land in the area has been lost to erosion as a result of the absence of a sea defence wall which when constructed would protect the community from the vagaries of the tidal waves emanating from the sea.

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr E.T. Mensah, was impressed at the progress of work when he led a team to the project site Thursday to inspect progress of work.

He commended the contractors for the work done so far and pledged the governments support towards ensuring that the first phase of the project was completed ahead of schedule.

Accompanied by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Shai-Osudoku, Mr David Tetteh-Asumeng the MP for Ada, Mr Alex Tetteh-Enyo, Dangme East District Chief Executive (DCE), Rex Wussah and some contractors, the minister said about 400 villages around the district stood to benefit upon completion of the project.

He appealed to the traditional authorities in the district to lend support to the contractors in the execution of the project.

The Project Manager, Mr Ewan Terblanche, said the company was maximising the use of indigenous labourers especially those in the area with technical expertise by way of providing them employment.

He said they were hoping to finish the project on schedule and called for co-operation from the community.

Whiles the DCE asked the contractors to take into account the construction of an access road to and from the project for economic purposes the Paramount Chief of the Ada Traditional Area, Nene Kabo Akuaku III, implored the contractors to endeavour to complete the project on schedule to bring relief to the people.
