Governance Analyst and Development Expert, Dr. Benjamin Otchere Ankrah has questioned the loud silence of Organised labour, on the discussions pertaining to the devastating impact of illegal mining activities on rivers and other water bodies.
The conversation on illegal mining has resurfaced following the Ghana Water Company Limited announced that it is unable to get raw water to process for consumers in Cape Coast, Elmina and its environs due to the activities of illegal mining.
Ghana Water Company Limited has raised concerns over the relentless illegal mining activities in the Pra River, which are severely disrupting their operations.
Already, there have been reports of water shortages in parts of Cape Coast and its surroundings due to the inability of the water company to treat and pump the required litres to be supplied to customers.
On Peace FM’s 'Kokrokoo' morning show on Thursday, September 5, 2024, Dr. Otchere Ankrah said, “Who else should we entrust with the mandate to fight illegal mining apart from the President. The President should just act. As said by the Speaker of Parliament, we are unable to crack the whip because we are sponsored by galamseyers. Let us remember that if everyone in the country should perish as a result of the illegal mining, then who would you come to govern as President and Parliamentarian?"
Dr. Ankrah stated that governance in its purest state is to galvanise resources in terms of quality and quantity to solve societal problems.
“If we can’t solve galamsey, what else can we solve then”? he quizzed.
“Galamsey sites are full of arms and this is scary. The question therefore, is, where did they get all these arms from?"
He further lamented over the impudence that people have to transport excavators from the port which is driven through police checkpoints and barriers straight to the forest for galamsey activities yet the chiefs and state protocols turn a blind eye to the activities of galamseyers thereby urging them on to commit more atrocities to nature which adversely affects the health of the consumers of products infested with galamsey chemicals.
“An excavator is not a pen drive that you could hide in your pocket without anyone seeing it. I will be glad to hear from the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and all Organised Labour that they are demonstrating against the menace of illegal mining. Why are they all very quiet? This is our life!” Dr. Ankrah vented.
