Fourteen suspects, some of them high-profile criminals under investigations, have over the weekend escaped from the Community 22 cell in Tema, where they were being kept.

The Ghana Police Service has since mounted a serious manhunt for 12 out of the 14, who are still on the run, appealing to the general public to help in getting them rearrested. According to DSP, Kwesi Ofori, Public Relations Director of the Ghana Police Service, the 14 suspects escaped at about 6:30pm on Saturday when the counter Sergeant attempted to give food to one of the inmates.

The sergeant was reportedly dragged into the cell when he opened the locks to the cell to serve the ‘hungry’ inmates, and in a Rambo-style, all the inmates escaped. Luck however eluded two of the escapees as some public spirited members of the area assisted in re-arresting them.

The Tema Regional Police Command gave the assurance that anyone who proves information that would lead to the arrest of the escapees would be adequately rewarded. Meanwhile, the counter Sergeant (name withheld) has been placed in police custody, pending further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the jail break'

This is not the first time such a break was recorded in the harbour city. For instance in the early hours of 2nd October 2008, four remand suspects escaped from the Tema Community 2 police cells, after pouring pepper into the eyes of the police officer at the counter. The officer at about 5:00am opened the cell to collect the dustbin to be emptied by the labourer, when he was attacked. Last Saturday’s break recorded the highest number of escapees, with many of them reportedly being investigated for very serious offences.
