KNUST To Establish An Institute Of Peace

Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology (KNUST) is to be assisted to establish an Institute of Peace to train and build the capacity of people in conflict resolution, dialogue, mediation and ideals of peace.

Mr Daniel Boateng, Programmes Co-ordinator of the Peace Secretariat, Ghana, said this was part of the push towards deepening the country’s democracy by upholding the principles of peace.

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP), a research-oriented organization, committed to advancing peace in the world for the progress of mankind would be providing the funding.

Mr. Boateng said this at the commemoration of United Nations (UN) International Peace Day in Kumasi on Monday.

The event was also used to mark the centenary of the late President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and “The role of Dr. Nkrumah in the foundation of peace in Ghana” was the theme.

Mr Boateng drew attention to the need for Ghanaians to accept to use dialogue to settle all disputes and conflicts.

Mr. Samuel Sarpong, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), advised feuding factions in conflict areas across the country to be inspired by the UN’s Peace Day to bury their differences.

He said it was important for all to recognize that there could not be any meaningful development in any society in an atmosphere of chaos.

He urged the Peace Secretariat to consider forming Peace Clubs in tertiary institutions to sensitize students on the need to eschew all forms of violence.

Professor Merlin Mensah, Dean of Students, KNUST, appealed to the political leadership to reflect on the vision of the first President to build the nation into a prosperous one.
