The Deputy Minority Chief Whip and MP for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Hon. Gifty Eugenia Kusi has advocated the establishment of special homes for convicted nursing mothers to serve their prison sentences. Hon. Eugenia Kusi, who is also the MP for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, in the Western Region, made the suggestion in an interview with Peace FM.
According to her, the fundamental human rights of children are abused when they live with their mothers in prison. Hon Gifty Eugenia Kusi said children who live in prison with their convicted mothers are exposed to environments which she described as unhealthy to the upbringing of the children.
She is therefore calling on the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to examine the plight of children whose mothers are serving prison sentences and take immediate steps to protect the right of such children
