Snippets of information reaching Peace FM from Wassa-Dompoase, a farming community near Wassa-Akropong in the Amenfi East District of the Western Region indicates that about thirty (30) illegal miners are suspected to have died in a landslide that occurred yesterday.
Narrating the incident to Peace FM, Mr. Eric Coffie, the Secretary to the Small Scale Miners Association intimated that the landslide was as a result of about a forty-eight (48) feet trench dugged by the miners themselves.
He said a nearby tree uprooted to cover the trench rendered it impossible for the miners to escape. As attempts to retrieve the miners failed, bodies of eleven women who were part of the illegal miners were retrieved and confirmed dead.
Efforts were underway to retrieve the other 19 as at the time of filing this report.
