The Accra Metropolitan Assembly says it is determined to go after recalcitrant traders who continue to sell in the streets and pavements of Accra.

In an early morning exercise yesterday as part of the decongestion exercise, the task force of personnel from the Prisons Service and AMA guards seized various items that were being sold on the pavements at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Umbrellas used by traders as shades and covers for their wares were not spared either. Hawkers in front of the Pedestrian Shopping Mall of Odawna, Kwame Nkrumah Circle and those opposite and near the Neoplan Station, as well as traders opposite the Vodafone head office were also not spared.

An official of the Prisons Service, and member of the task force who declined to give his name, said the exercise was part of the on-going decongestion exercise to ensure free flow of vehicles and pedestrians. He said the exercise was being carried out simultaneously at the Accra Central Business Area and the Kaneshie market, among other centres.

He said the exercise was also to discourage traders from selling in the streets and on the pavements, and lamented that though the pedestrian mall was constructed for trading purpose most of the traders preferred to sell in the streets and pavements.
