A South African man has been charged with murder after his brother was hacked to death in front of his pupils near the northern town of Polokwane.

Guilford Shapo, a teacher at Masehlong Primary School, was attacked while invigilating an exam on Tuesday, South Africa's public broadcaster reported.

His younger brother Happy Shapo has been charged with the crime, police spokesperson Ronel Otto told the BBC. Mr Shapo was not asked to plead and the case was postponed until next week. "We were alerted by the pupils as they screamed and ran out of the mobile classroom," South Africa's Star newspaper quoted Noko Moabelo, the headmistress of the school in Ga-Mmasehlong village in Limpopo province, as saying.

"Mr Shapo was the only male teacher at the school. As women, none of us could take the risk of approaching the suspect," she said. Neighbours alerted by the screams rushed to the school to stop the machete attack, the paper reported. Guilford Shapo died later in hospital from his wounds.

Lt-Col Otto said Happy Shapo's bail application would be heard on Monday 21 November. South Africa's murder rate is at its lowest level since the end of apartheid in 1994, but it remains among the highest in the world with more than 40 killings a day.
