A 24-year-old trader is in the grips of the Tesano Branch of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for stealing a two-month-old baby girl at Circle.
Abigail Asabea, a native of Osino, Eastern Region, was said to have lured the babys mother from Bonfa in the Ashanti Region to Accra, Circle, where she took the baby from the mother and bolted.
She was later found by the police with the child at Osino where she lives together with the husband.
Experanza Ayesu-Danso, the Tesano Divisional DOVVSU Officer, told DAILY GUIDE that the baby was stolen on Good Friday, April 6, 2012.
Information gathered indicated that Abigail Asabea, a trader and married woman, visited Bonfa in the Ashanti Region to look for one Maa Abena, a friend.
After attempts to locate the said Maa Abena had failed, Esther Leek, 24, mother of the baby, and her husband, offered to shelter the suspect in their home until she found the said friend.
After staying with the victims family for two weeks and unable to find the said friend, Abigail told the guardians that she wanted to travel back to Odumasi Konogo where she claimed to live.
She also told couple that before she left, she would want to take the nursing mother and the baby for shopping on Good Friday just to show her appreciation for their hospitality.
On that fateful day, the suspect took Esther Leek, her two-year-old boy and the two-month-old child to Odumasi near Konongo for the supposed shopping.
At Odumasi, the suspect lured Esther that they continue the journey to Accra since shopping in Accra was very cheap.
When they got to Circle, around 1pm, suspect took Esther Leek to a hairdressing salon to fix her hair while she carried the baby who was then asleep.
Later, when the mother had finished her hair-do and was looking for the suspect and the child, they were nowhere to be found.
After efforts to locate the suspect and the baby had failed, a report was lodged with the Tesano police by the mother of the baby.
Later, Tesano DOVVSU received information that the child had been found at Osino in the Eastern Region and so with the help of the police, the suspect was arrested together with the baby on Saturday.
ASP Ayesu-Danso said Abigail would be sent to court today. The DOVVSU commander therefore advised parents to take good care of their children, particularly in cities, to prevent any unfortunate incident.
The baby girl has since been handed over to the parents.
Meanwhile, mother of the baby, Esther Leek, 24, told the paper that she decided to house the suspect after efforts to locate the said Maa Abena had failed.
