Government says it is surprised at the hullabaloo that has accompanied the imposition of tax on condoms.

According to a Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Murtala Mohammed, the idea to tax condoms was a proposal made by the Finance Ministry to be discussed and decided on by the Finance Committee of Parliament.

At the Daily Media briefing at Flagstaff House in Accra, Murtala Mohammed, stated that the taxes proposed do not apply to all condoms on the market.

The Deputy Minister again stated government's resolve to fight HIV and AIDS.

Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Murtala Mohammed, also spoke on a call by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, that government adopts a bi-partisan approach to dealing with the report on the incessant fire outbreaks.

He said the call is rather unfortunate because the investigations were done jointly by the US investigators and the country’s security agencies.

Mr. Moahmmed said the Security Agencies are independent entitities and their authority should be respected.
