President John Dramani Mahama on Monday commended the National Peace Council for playing a vital role that had over the months ensured peace and unity in the country.

He said their performance in Bawku, Yendi, Nkonya and Alavanyo and Hohoe had given a lot of credence to their role and government would provide them with the necessary resources to leverage their performance.

President Mahama gave this commendation when members of the Council called on him at the Flagstaff House, Kanda.

The members were at the presidency to hold a meeting with the President and discuss pertinent issues that would enhance the socio-economic advancement of the country.

Apart from offering government advice on various conflicts in the country, the Council had also been engaged in the direct resolution of some of the above mentioned conflicts that had hit the country over the years.

President Mahama said Ghana had over the years branded herself with peace and unity, which had encouraged investors all over the world into the country to do business and called on the Council members to protect that image for posterity.

He added: "Peace is the most priceless possession and government will do everything possible to protect and I know your role here is very vital for the achievement of that goal."

He said government managed to procure legal backing for the Council because of the respect and premium it placed on their role and appealed to them to discharge their duties dispassionately to win the support of every Ghanaian irrespective of their geographical location.

"Nobody should be discriminated against in this country on account of his geographical location, religion or ethnic group and government will give you all the resources to do your work dispassionately," he added.

Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the Council, said the respect and international recognition Ghana had gained over the years was due to her peaceful state and his outfit would continue to work harder to consolidate those gains.

He, however, underscored the need for settling petty inter and intra ethnic conflicts, which he said could escalate into major conflicts if not properly stemmed.

He said African countries and the outside world had over the years knocked at their doors to replicate their performance in those countries and they would be launching an international conference showcasing Ghana’s peace efforts on September 9 and 10 this year.

He added that their paramount goal in the country was to work towards the enhancement of national cohesion and called on all stakeholders to give them the necessary support to achieve it.

Also at the Presidency were members of the Global Leadership Training from the United States of America led by Reverend Gregg Johnson and Reverend Stephen Wengham.

The leadership that had undertook some charity works including medical screening for 3,000 people, provision of a bore-hole to Amonase Borketey community in the Eastern Region and donation to some selected schools, were at the Presidency to congratulate President Mahama for his ascension to the highest position of the land.

President Mahama commended them for their philanthropist work that had over the years complemented the efforts of government.
