The Trustcare Specialist Hospital and Fertility centre in Kumasi, the third fertility centre after those in Accra and Tema, has delivered its first twins through In-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Since it started operating in 2011, the centre has been delivering single babies.

But on July 12, 2013, the centre, a private facility, successfully delivered a set of twins.

The babies, a male and female, were deliverered to a couple who had had it difficult to achieve pregnancy after more than 10 years of marriage.

The mother of the babies is 45 years old.

IVF is a specialised process in the medical field that is used to help couples who for various reasons cannot achieve pregnancy naturally.

In Ghana, the service was first introduced by a private specialist hospital in Tema in 1990.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic at the centre in Kumasi, the clinical embryologist, Mr Isaac Kofi Adu, said the babies and their mother were doing well.

The Trustcare centre has since 2011 delivered several IVF babies, with some of the conceptions occurring at the centres in Tema and Accra.

Mr Adu said since the centre was new, its patronage had not been wide but all its clients, including two from abroad, successfully got pregnant.
