President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday presented a quantity of items and an undisclosed amount of money to the Lante Djan We, one of the clans of Ga Mashie towards the celebration of this year’s Homowo festival which comes off on Saturday, July 27, 2013..

The items included five bags of maize and several crates of assorted alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vandepuye, Deputy Trade and Industry Minister who made the presentation on President Mahama’s behalf said the gesture was to show the President's solidarity with the Ga people during their festive season and to call for a peaceful observance of the event.

He said the contribution was also to demonstrate President Mahama’s appreciation for the support he had received from the people of Ga Mashie and to ask for their prayers to ensure his tenure in office was fruitful, peaceful and beneficial to Ghana.

Mr Vanderpuye, who is also the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, said President Mahama would in the coming days make similar donations to the clans that make up the Ga Mashie and all other traditional houses in the Ga state.

He expressed the hope that just as last year’s event was carried out in a peaceful and cordial atmosphere, this year's celebration would also not be different.

Mr Walterman Oko Lamptey, Principal Head of the Lante Djan We thanked the President for the gesture, and gave the assurance that the festival would be celebrated in peace and harmony.

Homowo is a food festival celebrated by the Ga people in remembrance of a famine that once happened some centuries back in their history.

The event starts in the month of May with the planting of crops before the raining season.
