Nana Ben Essilfie, acting head of Kisewokan community in the Shama District, has appealed to fishermen to refrain from illegal fishing in order not to collapse the fishing industry.

He said as much as fishermen were facing challenges, they contributed largely to the decline of the industry with bad fishing methods.

Nana Essilfie said “if you catch the fingerlings, use chemicals ---, DDT for fishing and do light fishing how do you make progress in the industry.”

He said this during the inauguration of the Shama District Fisherfolks Coalition which has Nana Kwesi Ackon as the chairman, Mr Addo Blanskon as secretary , Mr Peter Sanka organizer and Mr Kwesi Koomsom the Public Relations Officer.

The fishermen and fishmongers from Aboadze, Abuesi and Shama had blamed the Jubilee Oilfield companies for their low catch, claiming they spilled oil on the surface of the sea.

Nana Essilfie told them to be aware that the oil industry would be operative therefore advised fishermen to adopt healthy fishing practices to enable them stay in business and stop the blame game.

Mr Kofi Assifuah, Shama District Zonal Officer of the Fisheries Commission, called for support for the fishermen to purchase of basic materials for their business.

Mr Assifuah suggested that the wooden boxes sold to the fishermen must be free.
