Suspected Thief Killed, 34 Suspected Robbers Arrested

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander has cautioned armed robbers committing violent crimes in the region that “no matter what you do, you can run, but you can’t hide. We will definitely come at you and arrest you.”

The Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, sounded the caution whiles addressing a news conference to parade the arrest of thirty four (34) suspected robbers including a woman in eleven separate operations in various parts of the region.

The suspects, aged between 17 and twenty four 24 years, included Godfred Yeboah , Augustine Obeng, Awudu Sameed, Mohamed Mubarak, Alhassan Amidu, Mansiru Mohamed, Abubakari Ahmed, Dauda Fuseini, Muntari Iddrisu, Omar Abubakar, Nansiru Chamba, Kobolatsi and Lalas amongst others.

Briefing journalists at the police headquarters in Kumasi, DCOP Kofi Boakye recounted that the suspects were picked up in connection with robbery incidents that have rocked the region in recent weeks. He also declared nineteen other suspects who are currently at large, wanted.

He pointed out that some items retrieved from the suspects including one I-pad, one mobile phone and a multi TV decoder have been identified by victims as their properties that were lost to armed robbers when they were attacked.

He narrated that the identified items were stolen from a reverend minister and his neighbors after two criminals attacked him with pump action guns.

“Godfred Yeboah and Augustine Obeng organized themselves with three accomplices and stormed the house of Rev. Paul Attah. They scaled the wall in his house at Mampongteng, opened fire and robbed residents killing one dog. They made away with thousand two hundred cedis, another nine hundred from another person, two laptops and three mobile phones. The conducted three robberies that night and they made away with two thousand five hundred from the last victim”.

In a related development, police in Kumasi Wednesday dawn shot and killed a suspected thief at the Kumasi Central Market who was allegedly looting shops in the area. The suspect who was allegedly stealing from a shop at about 2am, attempted to escape upon hearing the sirens of a police van. According to the Police Commander, the police had no option than to shoot at the suspect.

“We had information that there was an armed robber in a shop. We went there and realized that the person had cut the wires and entered through the rooftop. Police tried to enter there but one police officer was hit with a crowbar in the dark and the police had no option than defend themselves by shooting,” he narrated.

DCOP Kofi Boakye gave assurances that the police will not relent in their efforts at arresting armed robbers terrorizing residents and perpetrating violent crimes in the region.
