Police in the Ashanti Region have given a stern warning to vehicle owners abusing trade license number plates also known as DV or DP plates.

The DV and DP number plates are temporally issued by the Driver and Vehicular License Authority (DVLA), to vehicles imported into the country before a permanent number plate is issued.

But according to the police, many people are abusing the use of the DV plate by using it for illegal purposes and also beyond the stipulated time. The Ashanti Regional Police Command, over the weekend impounded about 200 cars with DV and DP number plates.

Addressing the 200 car owners and journalists at a news conference at the Police Depot at Patasi in Kumasi, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, said the move is to address the situation where some criminals operate with unregistered number plates, making it difficult for police to trace them.

He told owners of the impounded vehicles that while the trade plates are issued under strict prohibitions such as using such cars for social events like weddings, funerals or for transporting children to and from school, criminals are also known to use same for their nefarious activities.

The Police Commander has for now pardoned the offenders with a caution to arrest and prosecute anyone from henceforth, for flouting any provision of the Road Traffic Act 2004, Act 683, that regulates the use of DV and DP trade number plates.
