The Dynasty Chinese Restaurant, a popular restaurant located along the Osu Oxford Street in Accra, has been closed down by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for operating under unhygienic conditions.
This was when the AMA Public Health Director, Dr. Simpson Boateng, led a team of health experts from the assembly to inspect the sanitary conditions there.
The team, after inspection, observed that the restaurant was operating in filth, despite its splashy look. The kitchen was covered with cobwebs, and the walls were very dirty.
Moreover, there was stagnant water behind the restaurant with mosquito larvae. In addition, soot oil had accumulated on the heat extractor in the kitchen where there was a pungent smell.
Dr. Boateng said the team had no option than to close down the facility because it was unsafe for people to patronize food prepared under such conditions.
The team also visited Frankie’s Restaurant, Chicken Republic, Noble House Chinese Restaurant, among other restaurants, all in Osu.
At the Noble House Chinese Restaurant, the team observed that it was operating under hygienic conditions with the exception of the head extractor at the kitchen and fridges which had some dirt.
The team advised the manager of the restaurant to address that situation to avoid closure in future.
At Frankie’s the team was not pleased with the renovation work going on at the restaurant while food was being prepared at the same time.
He explained it was unhygienic for the restaurant to operate while renovation was ongoing and entreated the chief executive to speed up the renovation work and complete it within the period given him.
Explaining the rationale behind the exercise, Dr. Boateng said it formed part of the assembly’s efforts to rid the capital of the cholera pandemic which had claimed dozens of lives in the past few months.
He said the assembly would embark on the exercise unabated to ensure that restaurant and food vendors operated under hygienic conditions.
