If you want to deliver your best, you must ensure that your environment is conducive to success! The quality of work produced is influenced by the quality of the surroundings within which we work. Have you noticed how the state of your desk affects your productivity and people’s perception of you?

When your desk or work area is organized and tidy, you also have a clearer mental space which allows you to think and act more efficiently.

Not knowing where specific items are placed within your workstation and general clutter makes you appear disorganized and results in time wasted looking for things. Even if you live by the mantra ‘this is organised chaos’ and claim to know where everything is kept, an untidy desk is not at all attractive no matter what explanation or excuse you have to offer.

In addition, it is a huge risk to your organization in terms of security and efficiency as far record keeping is concerned and it makes it more difficult for your work to be adequately covered in case of absence from the office – be it short or long term.

Therefore, organizations have a vested interest and an important role to play by recognizing this issue as essential to business success and taking action accordingly. Here are some tips to help you tidy work area and make your workspace the standard to be emulated:

• As far as practicable only keep documents currently being worked on or needed in front of you or on your desk.

• Dispose of any papers you no longer need straight away in waste bins or for recycling, shredding confidential information in accordance with laid down procedures.

• Make time for filing and tidying up – allocate some time every day or a few times a week for this very important and seemingly menial task.

• Adopt the mantra “a place for everything and everything in its place” – file all papers in correctly labelled files.

• Your organization can institute a clear desk policy and must and an effective filing system for staff to follow.

• Go paperless! Make use of Information and communication technology: whenever possible, make tasks paperless and store electronically with the right back up and retrieval systems.

Treat your desk area with due care and discipline – it will help you to perform better at work and give a professional impression!!!
