Authorities of the Bolgatanga Senior High School (Bigboss) in the Upper East Region have temporarily closed down the school following disturbances in the school.

The decision was reached after a series of meetings were held on Monday and Tuesday to review the security situation on the ground. The students were given an hour to leave the school's premises.

The Senior House Masters in the School, Mr.Steven Awasinab who made this known to the Daily Graphic at the school's premises after the meetings stated that, the authorities took into consideration a lot of security matters before reaching the decision.

He noted that the closure was to help calm down the situation on campus adding that the authorities would continually review the issue before recalling all the students including the final year students who were preparing for their mock exams before the unfortunate incident occurred.

Arrest

Meanwhile, five students have been arrested in connection with the disturbances at the school.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service in the region, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thomas Agbanyo, security on the campus would be tightened following the burning down of the Senior House Masters vehicle.

He said the police would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that there was maximum protection for life and property.

Background

On Monday students of the school went on rampage over the death of a Form Three Business student at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.

The student, identified as Emmanuel Bawa, reportedly passed out after falling on the ground.

Unconfirmed reports had it that Bawa was suffering from epilepsy.

According to the police,as a result of Bawas death, some of the students started hurling stones at some of the teachers of the school, while other students reportedly vandalised a vehicle and a shop belonging to the senior housemaster and his wife respectively.

The senior housemaster has denied chasing students leading to Bawas death.

He also described as untrue earlier media reports that alleged that Bawa had died through a head bash.
