Eight out of 10 people from Pakyi No.2 in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region have been remanded in custody after appearing in court in connection with riots in the farming community on Sunday.
They are Akua Konadu, 48; Iddrisu Appiah, 23; Kofi Agyemang, 25; Isaac Afrifa, 19; Kofi Boadu, 17; Kwadwo Isaac, 25; Kingsly Oti, 26, and David Mensah, 24, who are food vendor, driver, electrical engineer, drivers respectively.
The Bekwai Circuit Court, however, granted bail to 77-year-old Adwoa Minta, farmer, and Opanin Akwasi Agyei, 72, farmer, to reappear before the court on December 16, 2014 with the other conspirators and accomplices.
Police prosecutor, Supt Emmanuel Akunnor told the court that 13 others remained at large and were being sought for by the police.
He gave their names as Prince Osei Bonsu, Osei Bonsu Snr, Asante Mensah, Kwame Kumasi, Godfred Amponsah, Akwasi Wereko, Kwabena Okyere, aka Poison, Agyei Busman, Osei Bobbie, Osei Kuffour, Opoku Akyinaba, Akwasi Yeboah and Adu Opoku.
On December 7, 2014, the prosecution said the accused persons ran riot and vandalised several properties at the Pakyi No.2 chief’s palace after invading the place in a Rambo style.
According to Supt Akunnor, the accused persons also caused damaged to the chief’s private vehicle as well as that of Gyaasehene in the process.
He indicated that the incident happened around 9:00am at the time the chief and his elders had gathered to make libation to climax the Akwasidae festival of the Asante people.
He added that the blood thirsty hoodlums again subjected some of the stool elders to severe beatings, broke into the stool room and made away four of the black stools.
They were later arrested following police’s intervention to restore law and order in the traditional community that has witnessed uneasy calm for some years now.
