The Police in Tamale have arrested a couple for subjecting three female students of the Nuriyya Central Islamic School to severe beatings for allegedly stealing GH¢3,100 from their shop at the Kaladan Park in Tamale.

The couple, Hajia Fati Karim and Alhaji Abdul Karim, after failing to force the students to confess to stealing the money, locked them up in their shop and subjected them to severe beatings.

Not satisfied, the couple, after releasing the victims, also raised an alarm that attracted a mob who also subjected the girls to further torture. They were eventually rescued by an  Islamic cleric, Mallam Bashar, who called in the police to whisk them away to safety.

Victims hospitalised
The victims, Sheriffa Mohammed, Samira Abubakari and Ajara Abdallah, all aged 18, have been hospitalised at the Central Hospital at Tishegu in Tamale with wounds all over their bodies as a result of the beatings. And according to sources at the hospital, one of them might lose her hearing.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Tetteh, who narrated the incident to the Daily Graphic, said the couple were arrested when they came to the police station to lodge a complaint and were subsequently charged with assault, causing harm and unlawful damage.

They will be put before court.

Briefing
According to ASP Tetteh, on February 9 this year,  the three students — all aged 18, —went to a shop belonging to Hajia Fati at the Kaladan Park area to buy an item. Upon arrival, they saw the suspect mopping the shop.

He said one of the girls, Samira, then offered to assist the woman in her mopping exercise which she obliged. Upon finishing the exercise, the victim asked permission to leave with her friends.

Later, Hajia Fati detected that an amount of GHC3,100 in her purse was missing.

ASP Tetteh said Hajia Fati pursued the three girls and brought them back to the shop but could not find the money in their possession after a thorough search. Not satisfied, she called her husband who joined her to subject the girls to severe beatings and the subsequent torture by the mob.
