Three families on Friday lost all their belongings in a fire incident that engulfed their block at the old Uadarra Barracks of the Fourth Infantry Battalion in Kumasi. None of the three families was able to salvage anything as the fire burnt almost everything in its way.

The fire which was said to have occurred around 1:30 pm, swept through the three wooden flats which served as residential accommodation for both civilian and military personnel of the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces.

There was however no casualties as all the personnel were out on duty and their children were in school.

Confirming the incident to graphiconline, the Public Relations Officer of the Central Command, Lieutenant Christiana Osei-Duah, said it was around 1:30 pm that the command had a call from an eye witness that there was fire at the Senior Non Commissioned Officers Quarters at the barracks.

She said a call was placed to KMA fire Service which got to the scene within 15 minutes and managed to contain the fire.

Lt Osei-Duah described the incident as very unfortunate but was grateful that no life was lost.

According to her, the eyewitness said she heard an explosion from one of the rooms which was followed by the fire which quickly spread to the other rooms.

While investigations were under way to establish the cause of fire, she said the affected families will be given a temporary accommodation at the Central Barracks and some reliefs items issued to them while awaiting further instructions from Head Quarters.

According to her, per the military rules, such victims were entitled to some compensation to enable them restart life.

It will be recalled that somewhere last year, a family of four perished in a similar incident when fire engulfed their room while they were asleep. The fire incident happened in the same establishment.

A military Corporal, his pregnant wife, daughter and niece were all burnt beyond recognition in that fire.
