36-years-old, Charles Antwi serving a 10 year jail term for attempting to assassinate President Mahama is at the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI).
According to his brother, Kwame Poku, his brother told him on phone that he is doing well at the BNI cells located near 37 Military hospital in Accra.
Charles Antwi, carried a gun to the Ringway Gospel Centre branch of Assemblies of God Church, where President Mahama and his family fellowship.
He was seen fidgeting with a gun in the auditorium and was arrested by security personnel present. He was later charged with possession of firearms without lawful excuse contrary to Section 11 of NRCD 9 (1972) but pleaded not guilty.
Ironically, he confessed to the court that he had indeed wanted to kill the president and was handed a 10 year jail term to be served as the Nsawam prisons. But days after his conviction, his brother in an interveiw with Adom News said Charles is still at the BNI cells.
Though Kwame Poku could not tell why the BNI is keeping his brother after the court ruling, he is happy the convict is well. He added that, the family will meet and decide on the way forward because Charles Antwi’s condition demands treatment.
Meanwhile two humanity groups Mental Health Society of Ghana (MEHSOG) and Basic Needs-Ghana have expressed concern over Charles Antwi’s incarceration arguing that the convict should be supported with mental health treatment.
The two organizations say they are ready to work with the family to support the rehabilitation of Charles Antwi.
