The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has cautioned residents and shop owners at Okaishie to show commitment to clean up exercises.
Numo Blafo Omeatu III, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the AMA in an interview with the Ghana News Agency during the National Sanitation Day, said the shop owners have closed their stores but are reluctant to take part in the exercise.
He said it is time everyone rise up to their responsibility towards the environment to ensure good sanitation.
Numo Blafo advised the people to desist from politicising environmental issues since it undermines national efforts at combating the problem.
He asked the public to understand that the AMA alone cannot undertake the enormous environmental challenges in the present circumstance of the population explosion.
“Therefore there is the need for everyone to help revive the self-help spirit in all communities,” Numo Blafo urged.
At Abossey Okai, the AMA PRO commended the leadership of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association for their efforts at monitoring sanitary conditions and hygiene within the community.
The Association leadership ordered the closure of all shops and members desilted drains and swept surroundings in an effort of preventing diseases.
Numo Blafo called on community members to encourage themselves to attach special importance to environmental sanitation in order to reduce the outbreak of diseases.
Mr Collins Sam, an Executive member of the spare parts dealers in an interview said it is sad that; “almost everyone is looking up to the AMA for everything and not ourselves or the assemblymen in our areas”.
He appealed to residents at Abossey Okai to be more proactive to the current unhealthy practices associated with indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains.
“Our attitudes towards keeping and ensuring a clean environment need to change for the better,” he said.
