The Police in Obuasi have arrested one Yaw Acheampong, a taxi driver, for allegedly setting his ex-lover and rival ablaze while they slept.

The suspect was alleged to have set the room in which the two lovers were sleeping out of jealousy after his ex-lover, Yaa Serwaah, alias Attah, had called off their 13-year-old relationship.

Acheampong and Yaa Serwaah had cohabited for almost 13 years and had a twelve year old son from the relationship until a month ago when the woman quit the relationship and moved in with Yeboah.

Briefing Graphiconline, the Obuasi District Commander of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Matthew Asante, said the incident occurred at around 2 AM on October 26, 2015. According to him, the police had information that a house at Nyamesom, a suburb of Obuasi was on fire and the emergency services were called in to assist.

He said one male, Akwasi Yeboah, aged 30 and a lady, Yaa Serwaah, aged 29 were badly burnt in the fire and were rushed to the Anglo Gold Ashanti Hospital but due to the severity of the injury, they were referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

DSP Asante said the two were on admission until Wednesday, October 29, 2015 when they both gave up the ghost.

He said the police initially treated the issue as a normal fire incident until the mother of Yeboah reported to the police that she suspected Acheampong, to be the brain behind the fire.

According to the police, the mother of the deceased said she boarded a taxi where she overheard a taxi driver telling someone over the phone that “I have burnt them and I am not sure if she should come back to life, she will ever cheat on a man.”

Mr Asante said the lady was still making her complaint to the police when the said taxi passed in front of the station, causing the mother of Yeboah to prompt the police. He said when the cab was stopped, the driver turned out to be Yaw Acheampong, the former lover of Yaa Serwaah.

He said Acheampong, admitted that he and Serwaah lived together as a couple though they were not legally married until a month ago when she moved out of the house.

He, however, denied ever setting the room on fire.

But Mr Asante said, the police was still holding him as the prime suspect and would soon process him for court to have him remanded to enable the police complete its investigations.
