The Police in Accra have arrested some 29 persons, including a national security officer, suspected to have committed various crimes in the national capital. The persons were alleged to have been involved in various crimes including break-ins, acts of fraud and theft in Accra.
The Madina Divisional Police commander, Chief Superintendent, Yakubu Aggrey Nangtomah, told Citi News the arrests followed an operation in Madina and its environs to rid the area off criminals ahead of the Ramadan celebrations on Wednesday. “For our preparation towards a peaceful Sallah, we have conducted proactive policing activities which resulted to the arrest of these suspected criminals and accused persons,” he said. According to Chief Supt Nangtomah, the national security officer, an ex-military sergeant, was arrested for allegedly duping an individual of an unspecified amount of money during a car deal.
Some other arrested suspects were reported to have engaged in various crimes including, stealing a motorbike valued at $5,000. One other suspect, identified only as Edem, bolted away with client’s car after it was given to him to do repair work on and subsequently used it as a taxi. Chief Supt Nangtomah noted this exercise was undertaken “to ensure we have an incident free Sallah.”
He added that “prior to that, the division mounted a serious swoop on various criminal hideouts in Madina market and we arrested 29 suspected criminals.” Some of the criminals have since been granted bail and investigations are still ongoing with the suspects scheduled to appear before court in due course.
