The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted 206 compressed slabs of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp, at the Low Cost area of Aflao.

The vehicle, with registration number GN 2510-09, was impounded by the Preventive Mobile Unit (PMU) of the Customs Division last Sunday. It was carrying four packages found to be 190.185 kilogrammes of the illicit substance.

Briefing journalists on the arrest, the Aflao Sector Commander of  the Customs Division of GRA, Ms Augustina Dede Quaye, said officers of the PMU spotted the vehicle at about 5.30 p.m. but when they signalled it to stop the driver ignored them.

Hot chase

She said the vehicle was given a hot chase until the driver finally stopped at Sepekope at the Aflao Low Cost area, abandoned the vehicle and fled.

She expressed misgivings about the behaviour of residents of  Aflao Low Cost because some of them were obstructing the arrest of the vehicle, adding that it was against the law to obstruct officers going about their duties.

She said obstruction of officers going about their work was assuming an alarming proportion, adding that in April this year, some officers were attacked at “Beat nine” when they made an interception of smuggled goods.

Ms Quaye said the vehicle was eventually taken back to the Customs Division office at Aflao and that it would only be released when the owner or the conveyor came to claim it within 30 days or else it would be confiscated to the state.

She said the officers were on top of their job to ensure that no prohibited items were brought into the country, especially in an election year.
