Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Simon Yao Afeku has reiterated his earlier warning that, the police will not cover any criminal or anyone found indulging in illegal political activity before and during the elections.
“Criminals will be dealt with according to the laws of the country; we will not entertain people who will hide under the colours of political parties to engage in illegal activities this campaign period,” he emphasized.
According to him, political parties operating in the region have all signed an undertaking to ensure that this year’s electioneering is peaceful and violence free, and so he expects them to comport their followers.
DCOP Afeku gave this warning at a media engagement programme put together by the Upper East Regional Media Advisory Committee, as part of efforts to sensitize media practitioners in the region to lead the campaign for violence free campaigns and peaceful elections in the region.
The Regional Police Commander hinted that, the Service has earmarked some 949 polling stations in the region as electoral flash-points out of a total of over 1200 polling stations in the region.
“We will keep watching activities in and around the areas accommodating these polling stations. We are bent on keeping the peace across the region and at all polling stations so our officers are alert and will pick up anyone found to be engaging in actions that could spark violence in an area or polling station, before and during the voting process.” DCOP Afeku said.
He has therefore called on all stakeholders to report any worrying trends they discover in their areas, especially the Peace Ambassadors, to enable the police map up strategies to nip the anomaly in the bud.
The Chairman of the Upper East Regional Media Advisory Committee, Robert Ajene advised the participants and media practitioners in the region to see the December 7 Elections as important as previous ones and work hard to improve on their conduct during the elections.
